PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention Supports

WHAT IS SCHOOL-WIDE PBIS?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing school-wide expectations for behavior, celebrating student success, and providing students with support to achieve social, emotional, and academic success at school.

Attention is focused on creating and sustaining school-wide, classroom, and individual systems that help students identify and develop self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO FOCUS ON TEACHING POSITIVE SOCIAL BEHAVIORS?

Frequently, the question is asked: "Why do we have to teach kids how to behave? Don't they already know the rules? Why can't we just expect good behavior?"

The rules for school shouldn't be a mystery, and students shouldn't have to guess what they are!

More importantly, when students are explicitly taught about school-wide rules, everyone develops of an understanding of what is expected and what happens when school rules aren't followed.

In the past, school-wide discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior, often by implementing punishment-based strategies including reprimands, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions, and expulsions. There are always consequences for misbehavior, but research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective.

As a school, we are committed to educating students and helping them develop the skills they need to succeed, including how to behave at school.

Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important part of a student's educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and recognizing students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur and then responding. The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.

WHAT DOES PBIS LOOK LIKE AT FAIRMONT?

Behavior Expectations: There are three school wide expectations for student behavior. They are:

  1. Be Safe
  2. Be Respectful
  3. Be Responsible

Labeling Appropriate Behavior in Action: Our school wide matrix defines what it looks like and sounds like to demonstrate being safe, respectful and responsible within various areas of the school.

Teaching Appropriate Behavioral Actions: A team of teachers has written a variety of instructional lessons to introduce our school behavior expectations. Each lesson is designed to give students the tools to succeed within any area of the school campus. Lessons are scheduled to be taught school-wide throughout the entire school year.

PBIS Team: Our PBIS team is a voluntary group consisting of school administration, teachers and support staff, parents are also welcome to join. The team meets monthly to review school-wide data, identify strengths, and discuss areas for improvement. In addition, the team brainstorms and plans ways to reinforce and strengthen school-wide PBIS efforts. If you would like to join the team or observe a meeting, please contact the Office at 453-6240. Everyone is welcome to attend!
